Target Audience: Anesthesiologists, block nurses, and administrators who would benefit from observing an established ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia practice; learning an array of single-shot and continuous catheter techniques; understanding the specific roles of the anesthesiologist-block nurse care team model of regional anesthesia delivery; observing approaches to effective documentation and billing, and learning the key steps in setting up a successful continuous ambulatory catheter program.

Overview:

Each year anesthesiologists at the Andrews Institute ASC perform over 3000 ultrasound-guided nerve blocks including over 1600 continuous ambulatory perineural catheters. Common blocks performed at Andrews include interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, axillary, popliteal, tibial, fascia iliaca, femoral, adductor canal / saphenous, TAP, PECS, and rectus sheath. Since our USRA preceptorship courses are held on the busiest block days, the result is an incredible opportunity for preceptors to witness a vast number of blocks, while interacting with the experts as they perform these procedures.

The USRA preceptorship track for nurses occurs on the same days as the physicians thus getting to experience the ASC at Andrews institute on its busiest block days.  You will observe physicians as they perform upper and lower extremity catheters and single-shot blocks. Your experience will also focus on shadowing the block nurses in their roles. You will see in person how the block nurses maintain the efficiency of a block program while learning the skills they use to keep their patients safe and happy.  There is a lecture and scanning component also included in the two-day preceptorship.

Objectives:

It is intended that at the conclusion of the course participants should be able to:

1.  Prepare appropriate evidence-based nerve blocks & continuous catheter techniques for specific surgical procedures, & increase the utilization of these blocks in daily practice.

2.  Describe holistically the ingredients required to set up a successful ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia practice.

3.  Identify with ultrasound the key anatomic landmarks & targets for performing every common peripheral nerve block.

4.  Construct the critical steps of in-plane and out-of-plane ultrasound-guided needle insertion.
